State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang on Friday 1st May, 2026 presided over the handover and groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation of Pece War Memorial Stadium.

The redevelopment of the Gulu-based stadium forms part of Uganda’s preparations to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ogwang said.

The project aims to upgrade Pece Stadium to meet international standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Once complete, the facility will boost Uganda’s readiness for the continental tournament and improve sports infrastructure in Northern Uganda.

“This is a key step in ensuring Uganda delivers world-class venues for AFCON 2027,” Ogwang said during the ceremony. “Pece Stadium has historic significance, and this upgrade will benefit athletes and communities for generations.”

Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will co-host AFCON 2027 under the Pamoja bid. Pece Stadium is one of several venues earmarked for upgrades ahead of the tournament.
