Police in Gulu City arrested 90 suspected criminal gang members during coordinated night operations within the city
The operations were carried out on February 15 and 16, 2026, targeted suspected criminal cells operating within Gulu Central Business Division and neighboring divisions in Gulu City East and West.
Confirming the operation, Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong said the crackdown focused on crime-prone areas including Cemetery Road, areas opposite GASCO Petrol Station, and Prisons Ward.
Mudong said the suspects had been terrorising residents at night and disrupting business activities in the city centre and surrounding areas.
“During the operation, we arrested 90 suspects found in possession of suspected opium, house-breaking implements, and sharp knives,” Mudong said.
Preliminary screening revealed that several of the suspects were recently released from prison under plea bargain arrangements, while others had been sentenced to community service, which some reportedly defaulted on and failed to reform.
Mudong said the security operation will continue until order and safety are fully restored in the city.
"Screening is still ongoing. We are taking fingerprints to document and trace their previous criminal records, recording statements from suspects and other relevant sources, and exhibiting recovered items,” he said.
The recovered exhibits include house-breaking tools, knives, and suspected narcotic substances.
Mudong added that once investigations are complete, case files will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for legal guidance before suspects are arraigned in court.
The police reiterated their commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and ensuring public safety in Gulu City.
