Three people including the driver are feared dead after the vehicle they were traveling in plunged into River Nile at the Karuma bridge in Kiryandongo district.
An Isuzu Elf Truck registration number UAY 284Q loaded with dried maize was reportedly travelling from Northern side heading towards Kampala on Monday lost control and plunged into the river at around 8pm.
Police say several occupants were on board at the time, and only one body has so far been recovered, while others remain missing.
"One of the victims attempted to jump out of the vehicle but hit his head on the road and died instantly, while the truck overturned into the river with the other occupants trapped in side,'' Traffic Police Spokesperson, Micheal Kananura said.
Authorities have urged motorists, most especially those driving heavy commercial vehicles to observe speed limits and exercise caution when approaching the bridges and other high risk sections of the highway to avoid similar tragedies.
