Gulu City Mayor-elect Gunya Julius Labeja's election has breathed life into the song by dancehall artist Chameroon, who's been hitting the limelight lately.
Released in 2021, the "Gunya" song hype seems to represent not only the incoming mayor's name but also his ability to splash the desirable 50k shillings associated with the prestigious Gorilla code-named "Gunya" in local Luo dialect.
With Labeja's election and kids enjoying the tune, "Gunya" seems to be becoming a household name. When someone asks for "Gunya", they're asking for a 50k note - it's about money, "sente" or "pesa" in Kiswahili.
What's left to see is whether this will propel Chameroon to fame again.
