The leader of opposition Hon Betty Aol Ocan has on Monday asked the government to close Elegu border point because of an overwhelming number of COVID-19 patients at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.
Gulu Regional Hospital is now admitting a scary number of 112 COVID-19 patients who are all truck drivers who were intercepted from Elegu border point while returning from South Sudan. Elegu border point for the past one week has been registering the highest cases of COVID-19 in the country.
Ocan says the overwhelming number of COVID-19 Patients at the Gulu Regional Referral Hospital is alarming and the government and ministry of health should sort out the truck drivers at the border and if they fail to respond, they shall mobilise the community to block truck drivers.
''We stand In solidarity to call upon the government to radically sort out the mess of coronavirus cases admitted in Gulu Regional Referral Hospital immediately'' she stated
However, she said the hospital has a capacity of only 11 COVID-19 patients and the total number of patients are now up to 112.
"Gulu Regional Referral Hospital has a capacity of only 11 COVID patients. In spite of this, 112 cases have been admitted. The hospital has no ICU centre to handle any of the Covid-19 patients if the need arises. Let the government and ministry of health also sort out the truck drivers at the border, if this is not done we shall mobilise the community to block them," she said.
