Shock has engulfed residents of Siaya County after a crocodile attack claimed the life of a mother fetching water as daughter painfully watches from Lake Victoria on Sunday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Elizabeth Akinyi Oketch (32) who had gone to fetch water at the beach on the shores of Lake Victoria when she met her untimely death.
According to the reports, the woman was with her daughter and had already filled four out of the six jericans they had, when she was attacked by the crocodile.
The Assistant Chief Esau Oduru, confirmed the incident saying that the woman was attacked and thrown into the water as the daughter watched helplessly.
The daughter, who was unhurt, raised alarm before members of the public rushed to the beach though efforts to rescue her mother bore no fruit.
He added that members of the public through support from local fishermen later managed to retrieve the body from the lake.
Oduru explained that the badly mutilated body was later moved to the Madiany sub-county hospital mortuary to await the postmortem examination.
