The Alur Cultural Festival has taken the initiative to fund tuition for 15 scholars across the greater Nebbi district, as a way of giving back to the community.
The Alur Cultural Festival is an annual event organized by a section of youth aimed at uniting Alur communities across the globe to celebrate and preserve their cultural heritage.
The scholarships were initiated on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, in three primary schools: Pokwero Primary School in Pakwach District, Paceru Primary School in Nebbi District, and Nvugu Primary School in Zombo District.
The institution is paying five Primary Seven scholars in each school, targeting those who are grappling with school fees issues.
Albert Oyirwoth Popularly known as Barto, the Chairperson of the Alur Cultural Festival, stated that the funding for these scholarships is sourced from the gate collection from the recent festival patrons. This initiative will cover the yearly tuition of the selected students.
"We will not stop here. If you perform exceptionally well in your Primary Leaving Examinations, we will continue to support your education. You are now part of our family." Barto told the Students they sponsored.
Parents of the scholarship recipients expressed their gratitude, highlighting the challenges they are facing in securing tuition for their children.
Jonathan Okecha, the Deputy Headteacher of Pokwero Primary School states that many parents struggle to afford their children’s education, leading to high dropout rates.
He emphasized that the number of female scholars tends to decline as they progress in their education, commending the moves.
"Many of our parents here are not able to focus on their children's education, despite their children's potential. This opportunity is a blessing for the selected students." Said the deputy Head Teacher of Pokwero Primary School, Jonathan Okecha.
Marisa Atim, the area Female Councilor for Ategu Sub County, appealed to the organizers to extend their support beyond Primary Seven, citing widespread financial constraints among the Parents of the selected students.
"The Alur Cultural Festival should not end here. I hope they extend such opportunities to more children with great potential." Marisa said.
Emmanuel Orombi, the Chairman of LC5 of Nebbi District and Mayor of Paidha Town Council in Zombo District, commended the initiative.
In addition to the scholarships, the organizers planted ten trees in each school to commemorate the partnership.
Among the Members who represented the organisation included; Doctor Roy Anyolitho, Hellen Atyeronimungu, Pruddy, and Queen of west Nile, Alobo Janet Patricia.
