Fatal road accident claims three lives as Lango Province team involved in a head on collision in Abutadi

At least three people were killed and several others suffered injuries in a fatal road accident on Saturday 26th May involving the Lango Province players coaster in a head on collision with fuso truck..

The accident occurred at Abutadi Trading Centre, along the Lira- Soroti route.

The accident involved a minibus belonging to Dokolo School of Nursing and Midwifery which was transporting Lango Province football players from Dokolo town heading towards Lira City while the Fuso, loaded with passengers returning from a traditional marriage ceremony, was traveling towards Dokolo.

The deceased have been identified as 5-year-old Anuari Musafiri Suwedi, and Suhaila Musafiri Suwed, 9, who had accompanied their father to watch a football match between Lango Province team and Dokolo Select.

Police spokesperson for North Kyoga Region Patrick Jimmy Okema said several passengers aboard the two vehicles sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention.

“The accident scene was promptly attended to by the Division Police Commander (DPC) of Lira-City East, accompanied by the Division Traffic Officer of Lira-City Central Police Station (CPS)," he said.

Okema said the driver of the Fuso that is believed to have caused the accident surrendered himself to Kaberamaido Police Station in Kaberamaido District, about 70km away from the accident scene.

“We have him in custody and he is expected to be transferred to Lira City CPS for further questioning and to assist with the ongoing investigation. The driver for the minibusw is receiving medical attention at Lira Regional Referral Hospital,” SP Okema said on Sunday.

He attributed the collision to over speeding and reckless driving by the Fuso driver.

"We appeal to all drivers and road users to always respect road traffic regulations to avoid such occurrences,” says Okema.

The players who were aboard the minibus are; Juliet Akello (team nurse), Abel Ogwang, 26 (team PRO), Ivan Opeto, 33 (team manager), Moses Samuel Okullo, 21, Solomon Ocelo, 17 Harrington Odong, 23, Emmanuel Okech, 22, Abraham Ogwang, 19, Innocent Maduka, 25, Ivan Olumu, 23, Dougo Olee, 23, Caeser Aca, 21, Haddon Otim, 1, Darius Ojok, 19, Gerald Kiirya, 21, Rogers Obira, 19, Ivan Okello, 30, and Musafiri Blick, 39.
