Former Pope Benedict XVI was a retired Catholic Church pope who served as the head of the church from 2005 to 2013.
He resigned on 28 February 2013 and had served after taking over the church's mantle of leadership from Pope John Paul II Pope.
Benedict became the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415 and spent his last days at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the Vatican.
The pope's demise was confirmed by a spokesman for the Holy See who said the beloved clergy rested on Saturday in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican.
"With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible.
