Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) Spokesperson, Ms. Jennifer Kalule has confirmed an F9 for the student who lost her sight during her first UNEB papers.
Senior Four candidates started their Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations on Monday, with Mathematics Paper One in the morning and Paper Two in the evening.
Upon kicking off with the paper, a student whose name has not been revealed from Kitgum Comprehensive College went blind immediately when she looked into the paper.
UNEB spokesperson Ms. Jennifer Kalule confirmed the incident but noted that if the blindness had continued they would register her under special needs education learners.
“The ideal thing would have been, if the blindness had continued, we would register her under special needs education learners and if she could not see anymore, then we would have to get someone to help her around,” she said.
She added, “I haven’t received a report this evening as of now to see how she is doing. I’m just going to do a round and find out how and what happened.
“But they would have let us know because we gave them permission to tell us what happened, but in the event that the blindness continues, then we will give her somebody because we have a team of people who help those learners with visual problems or hearing problems or interpretation problems.”
When we asked her the exact cause of the blindness, Ms. Kalule told this website that she has no idea what happened because she is not on ground.
“I have no idea I’m not on ground, we called the headteacher and he gave us what he told us. They just called him into the examination room and the girl told him she couldn’t see and she was taken to hospital. So, I really have no idea unless I get a medical report.”
Ms. Kalule adduced that she is most likely to get an F9 in Mathematics because in Mathematics paper one, she only answered one number and in Mathematics paper two she only wrote her name.
“She will be graded because she is present, its not like she is absent so of course, that is an F9 we can’t give her free marks.”
