A UPDF soldier identified as Private Mukanza Michelle has been detained by the combined security forces in Agago District for reportedly shooting a fan to death during a football match.
According to ASP David Ongom Mudong, the spokeswoman for the Aswa River Region Police, the Kalongo Police Homicide Detectives are currently looking into a shooting homicide that may have been committed by a UPDF soldier.
The suspect, who was allegedly intoxicated, is said to have attempted to join players on the field on May 31, 2023, around 6 o’clock, but chaos is said to have broken out as people tried to stop him from interfering with the game. This caused the suspect to go to his airport, where he grabbed a gun and shot Justine Omol, 25, twice in the thigh, according to an announcement from ASP Ongom.
Omol was then sent to Kalongo Hospital, where on June 1, 2023, he was declared dead.
Police detectives working under the direction of the scene of the crime officers have since visited, recorded, and recovered two cartridges as evidence from the incident.
“It’s quite sad that the cop who was supposed to watch out for the Wanainchi’s safety and security wound up hurting them.
We reject actions where people shoot defenseless, unarmed persons out of spite, said ASP Ongom on Friday.
“We would further urge the bereaved family and the entire members of the community to remain calm as investigations continue to ensure that the suspect faces the long arm of the law,” he continued.
The suspect, who is presently being held at the 5th UPDF Division Headquarters in Achol Pii, will reportedly face the appropriate charges, and the murder weapon has also been found, according to ASP Ongom.
As of the time of publication, the UPDF was still debating whether to transport Omol’s body to the 5th Division base for additional handling, therefore the body was remained at Kalongo Hospital for post-mortem.
