Police, military clashes with Muslims in Yumbe district over pork sale

On Tuesday morning Police and military in Yumbe District, West Nile sub-region fired live bullet and teargas to disperse Muslim community who stormed Yumbe town attacking pork sellers and Christian owned hotels.

This comes after their leader Sheik Kasim made inflammatory comments about pork, its sellers and eaters and and Christian-owned hotels accusing them of serving pork.

In a videos circulating on social media show police officers firing in the town, while a photograph of a protester bleeding heavily has gone viral, sparking outrage and concern among residents.

According to local sources, Sheik Kasim organized the protest, citing cultural and religious sensitivities in the predominantly Muslim community.

Yumbe is the only district in the country with a mainly Muslim majority population (76%), which is an exception for a Ugandan district, where 85% of the population is Christians. 

The town areas have some pork joints spread in different parts that were opened businessmen to cater for those who don't partake of the meat. 

Meanwhile the Prime minister Lemeriga Fadhil of the Aringa Kingdom in Uganda's northern district of Yumbe has condemned the protests in Yumbe town council, appealing for restraint and religious tolerance among the Aringa people.
