Gulu City Falcons RFC were on Saturday, 20th April 2024 crowned 2023/24 Nile Special Northern Rugby league champions after their final game of the season against Lira Bulls at Lango College grounds in Lira City.
Falcons beat Lira Bulls 14-24 at their home ground to finish the season unbeaten in the two rounds campaign, condemning the other three sides to the bride's maid role both home and away.
City Falcons finished the season with 28 points, 9 points ahead of Kitgum Lions who finished second and Lira Bulls who finished third.
City Falcons tries were run in by Rubangakene David, Omara Innocent Zinno, Lubanga Lee Richard.Openy Alphone was good with the kicking.
Meanwhile, Kitgum Queens also emerged as champions in the ladies category after finishing unbeaten in their league.
Both City Falcons and Kitgum Lions are going to be facing other teams from the other regions in the core status to see their through to Nile Special Rugby League which is yet to be announced by the Uganda Rugby Union.
Speaking to the Watmon Hassan Faruk,
Chairman Gulu City Falcons RFC, he said they knew that they were going via playing every game week that comes though it wasn't easy to take the management desk though finances were always inadequate to support the team weekly saying the challenge comes due to lack of sponsorship for them as a team which is still struggling.
"As Gulu City Falcons RFC we knew we were going through via playing but every game week was a hard one to take on the management desk as finances were always inadequate to support the team flying weekly budget. This challenge comes due to the lack of sponsorship."
He went ahead and congratulated all the teams that honored their fixtures against them and more especially the new entrant Omoro Kings who finished forth with zero points in the league.
"Congratulations to the teams that honored their fixtures against us, especially the newbies Omoro kings RFC and they were the first to score a point against us. Warm thanks to URU (Uganda Rugby Union ) for support, our dear fans who gave the little they had and our players for putting their body on the line."
He asserted that as a team which has been in the Core Status 15s qualifiers, they are having proper preparation while shaping their players via strength, and conditioning them with basic rugby skills and rules. He added that they are welcoming any aid from any well-wishers such as sponsorship,
"Core status 15s qualifiers is around the corner, we've been there and know the value of proper preparation, this made us not to rest in shaping the boys via strength and conditioning, basic Rugby skills and rules to accompany the individual qualities we have in the camp. Falcons have 4 Northern Rugby league trophies to their name and participated in numerous Uganda National Rugby events such as; 10th Guinness national rugby 7s, 10th Nile Special Rugby 7s, 11th Nile Special Rugby 7s, Core Status 15s qualifiers playoffs both in Jinja (dam water and Kampala (Kings Park Bweyogerere).
