A 36-year-old farmer, Richard Olwoch, has been gored to death by African buffaloes in Akwang Village, Paimol Sub-county, Agago District, after a herd of about 10 buffaloes strayed from Kidepo Valley National Park into community farmland.
The attack, which occurred at around 4pm on Saturday, has raised fresh concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the area.
Agago District Chairperson Wilson Otto said at least six farmers had been killed by wild animals in the district since the beginning of the year.
District leaders say prolonged drought has contributed to wildlife entering communities in search of water and pasture.
Authorities are engaging the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to return the animals to protected areas and find lasting solutions.
In 2024, President Yoweri Museveni directed UWA to construct an electric fence around the park to reduce wildlife incursions.
Meanwhile, Agago Woman MP Beatrice Akello Akori has called for faster compensation for farmers whose crops are destroyed by wild animals. The government has reportedly allocated Shs10 billion towards installing the fence.
