Gulu district has spent a total of about 242 million shillings in the 2022-2023 financial year in a move to provide clean water to its population.
Honorable Too-Otika Walter the Chairperson of Work and technical service for Gulu District says the district has spent a total of 42 million shillings on the rehabilitation of 10 faulty boreholes, while a total of about 200 million shillings was reportedly spent on drilling a total of 8 new boreholes to the water-stressed area in the district.
The components of the work that were done as part of the borehole rehabilitation include cementing or concretizing cracked boreholes, rebuilding the water flow of some boreholes, and replacing spoiled parts of the boreholes such as nuts, rusted cylinders, rods, and pipes among other parts.
The rehabilitated boreholes include Lela-nyang market in Ogwri Omel sub-county, boreholes at Gang pa Olwedo Ayewri Paibona sub-county, water point at Pakuba Tecwa, Ayweri Parish Paibona, boreholes at Kalanganya Cet Dyang Agora Parish Palaro Sub-County, boreholes at Can Coya Copil Angaya Unyama sub-county, borehole at Bika Atiaba, Atiaba north Bungatira sub-county, borehole at Wipolo Abalao-kodi Pok Ogali Owaloo sub-county, borehole at Patiko Angany Pawel Parish Patiko sub-county, borehole at Ajuku Primary school Anyadwe Patiko sub-county. It is estimated that each of these water points serves up to about 500 populations.
Meanwhile, the newly 8 drilled boreholes include the Apiyo Boke borehole in Pok Ogali Parish Omel Sub-county, the Lacede borehole in Otega parish Pukony sub-county, Laciri borehole in Bucoro Gwengdiya Awach Sub-county.
Other water points were the Bokeber B borehole in Paromo parish Awach Sub-county, Kari Aleda water point Paibona Sub-county, Koc-Angwen water point in Oroko Parish Palaro sub-county, Kololo borehole in Omoti parish Patiko sub-county and Agwee borehole in Pabwo Parish Owoo sub-county. The drilling was done by Icon Water Limited.
According to Too-Otika, all the newly drilled boreholes are expected to be operational in March this year, He however encourages the community to establish the water user committees that would ensure the total protection of the water point from the people with bad motives.
